Antimicrobial Drug–Resistant Escherichia coli from Humans and Poultry Products, Minnesota and Wisconsin, 2002–2004
The food supply, including poultry products, may transmit antimicrobial drug-resistant Escherichia coli to humans. To assess this hypothesis, 931 geographically and temporally matched E. coli isolates from human volunteers (hospital inpatients and healthy vegetarians) and commercial poultry products (conventionally raised or raised without antimicrobial drugs) were tested by PCR for phylogeneti...
متن کاملSocial availability of residual woody biomass from nonindustrial private woodland owners in Minnesota and Wisconsin
An important and potentially underused source of biomass that could be utilized in energy production is from nonindustrial private woodlands. We employ the Theory of Planned Behavior to estimate the social availability of woody biomass as a function of landowner behavior intent, landowner characteristics, forest land characteristics, and biomass price on stated willingness to harvest biomass in...
متن کاملHuman granulocytic ehrlichiosis in Wisconsin and Minnesota: a frequent infection with the potential for persistence.
Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) is a tickborne illness caused by an agent closely related to Ehrlichia equi and Ehrlichia phagocytophila. The clinical presentation is nonspecific, and diagnosis is made infrequently. Sixty-six sera were obtained from 54 patients in Minnesota and Wisconsin with undifferentiated fever during the summer and fall of 1993. Serologic reactivity with E. equi was ...
متن کاملHow Much is Minnesota Like Wisconsin? Assumptions and Counterfactuals in Causal Inference with Observational Data∗
Political scientists are often interested in estimating causal effects. Identification of causal estimates with observational data invariably requires strong untestable assumptions. Here, we outline a number of the assumptions used in the extant empirical literature. We argue that these assumptions require careful evaluation within the context of specific applications. To that end, we present a...
متن کاملAmoxicillin / Clavulanic Acid and Cefotaxime Resistance in Salmonella Minnesota and Salmonella Heidelberg from Broiler Chickens
This study investigated the resistance of various Salmonella strains to beta-lactam antibiotics. Salmonella Minnesota (36 strains) and Salmonella Heidelberg (24 strains) were isolated from broiler chickens and carcasses by the Disk Diffusion Test and resistance genes blaCTX-M-8, blaACC-1 and blaCMY-2 were detected by PCR. Of the 60 strains tested, 80% were resistant to at least one antibiotic. ...
